This is a chapter from the book The Character of Creatures: What the Animal Kingdom Teaches Us About God and His Word.
Smelly Friend – The Skunk
Imagine you hung out with a skunk all day, met him on your
lawn, picked him up and carried him around, played with him on the playground, and
then brought him to dinner. At the end of the day would he smell any better?
Would you smell any worse?
God gave us the skunk so that we could be reminded:
Do not be deceived: “Bad company
ruins good morals.” ~
1 Corinthians 15:33
Discussion:
1.
In any relationship you are going to move closer
to God or further from God. When we hang out with people who do not love God,
they are going to purposefully or accidentally move us away from what God wants
us to do. Do you know anyone who would pull you away from Jesus if you gave
them the chance?
2.
Skunks might be cute, cuddly, friendly, and
beautiful, so why don’t people keep them as pets? If the scent glands were
removed, could you keep one as a pet?
3.
Do you or your parents have any stories of
someone or something being sprayed by a skunk? How long did the smell take to
go away? How long does it take good morals to return if they are corrupted?
Error and vice are infectious: and, if we would avoid the contagion, we must keep clear of those who have taken it. ~ Matthew Henry
