This is a chapter from the book The Character of Creatures: What the Animal Kingdom Teaches Us About God and His Word.
God is in Control – The Dinosaurs
Did you know the Bible describes several dinosaurs? One is
named Behemoth; we call him Brachiosaurus today. Another is Leviathan; we are
not totally sure who he is since he is likely extinct now and the same name
might describe multiple sea monsters, but a gigantic fire breathing crocodilian
is likely; maybe Deinosuchus. Both of these animals are far too big and
powerful for human beings to tame.
God created them so we could see his strength and power:
Can one take [Behemoth] by his eyes, or pierce his nose with
a snare? ~
Job 40:24
Can you draw out Leviathan with a
fishhook or press down his tongue with a cord? ~
Job 41:1
Discussion:
1.
There is a lot of debate about dinosaurs, but
they are clearly described in the Bible. Why would God create such gigantic and
dangerous animals? Are there any gigantic and dangerous situations that you
need God to handle? Remember, what is impossible with men is possible with God.
“The Lord with his hard and great and strong sword…will slay the dragon that is
in the sea” (Isaiah 27:1).
2.
Many dinosaurs were killed in the flood of
Noah’s day. What evidence would you expect to find of a global flood? Ken Ham
hypothesizes that we would find billions of dead things buried in rock layers
laid down by water all over the earth. What do we find?
3.
Are you glad that you do not have to look out
for massive hungry lizards with huge teeth when you go outside? And yet they
were not our greatest danger! Our greatest danger was when we incensed a
righteous God with out sins, and yet he has made it so we do not fear his wrath
any longer because Jesus died in our place. “There is no fear in love, but
perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever
fears has not been perfected in love” (1 John 4:18).
From a biblical worldview, the extinction of dinosaurs is not a mystery. ~ Ken Ham
