Salvation is at Hand - The Eagle - The Character of Creatures

This is a chapter from the book The Character of Creatures: What the Animal Kingdom Teaches Us About God and His Word.

Salvation is at Hand – The Eagle

We have looked at a lot of animals that are warnings, now let’s take some time to look at some encouraging animals. Eagles are phenomenal birds that are much bigger than you might think, yet they leap into the sky and fly away. They can cover vast distances effortlessly.

God loves to use the eagle as an illustration:

You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. ~ Exodus 19:4

Discussion:

1.      I tried to sneak up on a bird of prey recently to get a picture. I got 100 feet away before it looked at me, spread its massive wings, and flew a half mile away to another tree. It took me three minutes to walk what it took him seconds to fly. Read Revelation 12:14 and consider how God cares for his church when she is in danger.

2.     Not everything about the eagle is encouraging, Proverbs 23:5 says our hope in wealth can escape as quickly as that eagle, and the speed of an eagle is used elsewhere to say how swiftly destruction can come upon sinners. But for the believer, “they shall mount up with wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31)…how can you run and not grow weary? How can the Spirit strengthen you to help your neighbors to see the glory of God?

3.     Psalm 55:6 uses the beauty of wings to carry us away, “O, that I had wings like a dove! I would fly away and be at rest…” A time is coming when evil men or death will fall upon you, but be not dismayed! God will rescue you from the snare of the evil one! He will carry you higher than the safety of eagle’s nests!

There is heaven in the sweet by and by, but there is to be victory in the nasty now and now. ~ Adrian Rogers
