This is a chapter from the book The Character of Creatures: What the Animal Kingdom Teaches Us About God and His Word.
Obvious Sins – The Komodo DragonSome animals look friendly until they show how dangerous they can be. People get mauled by raccoons every once in a while, and usually they have the excuse that the raccoon seemed so cute. No one has ever thought a Komodo Dragon looked friendly or underestimated his danger.
God created such a scary animal to remind us:
The sins of some people are conspicuous, going before them to judgment... ~ 1 Timothy 5:24
Discussion:
1. In Proverbs 1:10–19 there is a list of evildoers who are looking to hurt others for their own pleasure and their own gain. What are some of the obvious sins we see in their life? Do you know anyone like that in your life? Do you do any of those things?
2. Some sins are easy to see in other people, but hard to see in ourselves. We are our own best defenders; we like to think our intentions are good even if our actions are bad. But we could say the Komodo Dragon is only trying to satisfy his hunger when he eats you. Do his intentions really matter as he is biting you?
3. If you saw a Komodo Dragon approaching a group of little kids, what would you do? What if you saw people living in sin and mocking God, what would you do? Which is more dangerous, a Komodo Dragon or the wrath of God?
Sin is never small. It is always monstrous and infinitely terrible. To regard any sin as small is to misunderstand the whole biblical teaching on sin. ~ Martyn Lloyd Jones
