Dwell Secure - Mountain Climbers - The Character of Creatures

This is a chapter from the book The Character of Creatures: What the Animal Kingdom Teaches Us About God and His Word.

Dwell Secure – Mountain Climbers

Mountain goats, fallow deer, big horn sheep, and ibex are incredible climbers. They have been known to climb nearly vertical dams, leap down cliff faces, and escape from their predators by being unreachable. On at least one occasion a grizzly bear fell to its death trying to catch some Rocky Mountain Goats!

God gave these amazing climbers their abilities to illustrate:

He made my feet like the feet of a deer and set me secure on the heights. ~ Psalm 18:33

Discussion:

1.      Psalm 18 is all about God’s protection. But there is a tension in the Bible between our safety in God, and the fact that trials, tribulations, and persecutions abound. Does God want you to be safe? Will you ever be truly safe in this life? How about in heaven?

2.     Psalm 23 says that God prepares a table for us in the presence of our enemies. Our natural tendency is to run from our enemies, but God is at work in us. What does he want us to show our enemies? Read Matthew 5:43–47 for one answer.

3.     Romans 8:28–29 declares, “For those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose…to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers”. Do you or your parents have any stories from when God delivered from a great danger when you felt hopeless and wondered where God was? Read 2 Corinthians 1:10 and consider the greatest rescue.

Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God. ~ William Carey
