This is a chapter from the book The Character of Creatures: What the Animal Kingdom Teaches Us About God and His Word.
Thirst for Righteousness – The Camel
In a desert, do you know how long you can survive without
water? Best case you can make it three days. A camel, on the other hand, can
last five times that long. Why? Because he is storing water in his body and in
the fat in his hump.
A camel is a great
illustration from God:
His delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams
of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. ~ Psalm
1:2–3
Discussion:
1.
If the Bible is what satisfies our thirst for
God’s righteousness, how many Bible verses do you have memorized? Take a moment
and quote a few of them. How many Bible verses would you like to have
memorized? Fun fact: there are 31,102 Bible verses.
2.
There are many deserts in our lives. One
Christian went to prison for his faith in a country that did not love Jesus, he
said, “The only Bible you will have in prison is the one you have in your heart.”
What other circumstances would require you to need to have the Bible memorized?
3.
Could you imagine a camel who refused to drink
before a long journey? How far would he get? Psalm 119:11 says, “I have stored
up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Do you have enough
of God’s word stored up in your heart for the journey he has in front of you?
How are you being replenished on your journey?
“Brother David, God has really given you the gift of memory.” Paul Washer said to his friend David Miller, who replied, “No he hasn’t brother Paul, don’t talk like that; I just work at it harder than you do.”
